What is a DS28EA00 sensor ?

The DS28EA00 is a next-generation 1-Wire digital temperature sensor that integrates:

  • a calibrated thermal sensor (like the DS18B20),
  • a location function on the 1-Wire bus,
  • and a 64-bit EEPROM memory with a configurable address.

It is the ideal sensor for complex measurement networks or industrial multipoint chains, where the physical and software identification of each probe is essential.

Operating principle


The DS28EA00 converts temperature into a 12-bit coded digital data, transmitted via the 1-Wire bus.

It adds a key innovation: the "chain mode" localization, allowing for the detection of the physical position of each sensor on the bus.

The DS28EA00 follows the structure of the DS18B20 (12-bit ADC + internal calibration), but adds an identification EEPROM and a "chain mode" protocol.

Its accuracy and stability are comparable to those of high-end professional 1-Wire sensors.

🔹 Example 1 – Standard reading at 12 bits

The sensor returns:

  • LSB = 0x70
  • MSB = 0x05

Raw value 0x0570 = 1392₁₀ T = 1392 / 16 = 87.0 °C

🔹 Example 2 – Negative reading

The sensor returns:

  • LSB = 0x90
  • MSB = 0xFF

Raw value (two's complement):

Raw value 0xFF90 = -112₁₀ T = -112 / 16 = -7.0 °C

✅ Result: measured temperature = −7.0 °C.

The DS28EA00 operates as a standard 1-Wire sensor, but it can be connected in a daisy-chain topology, allowing the microcontroller to identify the physical location of each sensor.

🔹 Operating Principle

1️⃣ The microcontroller initializes the bus and detects the presence of each sensor.

2️⃣ In "chain" mode, the DS28EA00 transmits its physical position (1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc.).

3️⃣ Each sensor can be addressed directly by its ID or its position in the chain.

4️⃣ The temperature and identification data are then read via "Read Scratchpad" (0xBE).
